AdultIntestinal & hepatic amoebiasis 3-4 tab in divided doses for 5-7 days or 2 g daily as a single dose for 3 days. GiardiasisAdult 1 tab bid for 5 days. Childn 40-50 mg/kg daily for 5 days. Trichomoniasis 4 tab once daily or 1 tab bid for 7 days. Bacterial vaginosis 4 tab once daily or 1 tab bid for 5-7 days. Anaerobic bacterial infections 1 tab tid for 5 days or longer when needed. Childn 20-30 mg/kg/day. Prevention of post-op anaerobic bacterial infections 1 tab tid for 3 days pre-op, followed post-op by 1 tab tid up to the 7th day.
Hypersensitivity to imidazoles. Patient w/ active neurological disorders or history of blood dyscrasias, hypothyroidism & hypoadrenalism. 1st trimester of pregnancy.
Renal & hepatic impairment. For trichomoniasis, the sexual partner should be treated concomitantly to avoid reinfestation. Discontinue use if ataxia or CNS symptoms occur. Avoid prolonged use. Pregnancy & lactation. Elderly w/ neurological diseases.
P01AB01 - metronidazole ; Belongs to the class of nitroimidazole derivatives antiprotozoals. Used in the treatment amoebiasis and other protozoal diseases.
